The basics of Kilo.
New to Kilo? Start here.
What is Kilo, exactly?
Kilo splits recurring subscription bills with friends: Netflix, Spotify, gym memberships, and anything else on a schedule.
Create a split, invite members, and collect shares in the app. Pay manually or turn on autopay. Owners get paid through Stripe Connect. Kilo is not a bank and doesn't pay the underlying service for you.
How do I create a Kilo account?
Download from the App Store or Google Play. Sign up with email or Apple, verify your email and phone, and add a payment method when you're ready.
You must be at least 18.
How do I add my first split?
Tap the + button on Home, pick a service from the catalog (or enter a custom name and amount), set the billing day and monthly or yearly cadence, add members, and choose how to divide the total: equal shares, custom percentages, or fixed amounts.
Once invitees accept, they can pay manually each cycle or turn on autopay. Owners need to complete Stripe Connect onboarding before members can pay them.
How do I invite friends to a split?
Open the split and tap "Invite." You can search by username, pick from matched contacts (phone numbers are hashed on your device; we never upload your address book), or share a link from kilo.app.
If a friend isn't on Kilo yet, they'll get a link to download the app and accept. Split invites expire after 7 days if ignored. Invited members are not billed until they accept.

How do splits actually work?
The owner creates the split and usually pays the real service on their own card. Members pay their share in the app or via autopay. Owners receive payouts through Stripe Connect. Invited members aren't billed until they accept.
Can I split with friends who don't have Kilo yet?
Yes. Invite them, and Kilo will send them a link. They'll need to install the app and accept the split before their share can be paid. If they never join, you'll see a pending invite (expires after 7 days); no money moves until they accept.
How do I change a split (price, members, frequency)?
Open the split and tap "Edit." The owner can change the total, billing cadence, roster, and each person's share. Some changes take effect on the next billing cycle so this month's amounts aren't rewritten mid-flight.
Members get a notification when material changes are scheduled. If someone's invite is still pending, extra share may be parked on the owner until they accept.
How do I leave a split?
Open the split, tap the menu (⋯), and choose "Leave split." You'll remain responsible for your share of the current billing cycle, and you'll stop being charged going forward. The Owner is notified so they can find a replacement or adjust the other shares.
What if someone doesn't pay their share?
Late payers show as overdue. Autopay retries failed charges up to 3 times, then pauses. Missed cycles carry forward with a $1 late fee per cycle. Kilo doesn't cover a member's shortfall. The owner is still on the hook with the service provider.
Are we allowed to split a service between people not in the same household?
That depends on the service, not on Kilo. Services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Spotify Family have specific household or family-only rules in their own terms of service. Kilo provides the payment coordination. You're responsible for making sure your use complies with each service's rules.
If a service we don't own specifically prohibits splitting, we may remove those splits from Kilo on request.
Can I split a one-time expense (like a pizza)?
Kilo is built for recurring shared costs: subscriptions and regular bills. For one-off expenses, something like Venmo or Splitwise is a better fit for now.
Can one person be in more than one split for the same service?
Yes. If you have Netflix with your roommates and separately share a Disney+ family plan with your siblings, those are two independent splits. Kilo shows them in your home tab, and each has its own billing schedule and share amounts.
Billing, fees, and charges.
How charges work on splits.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit and debit cards through Stripe. You can also link a U.S. bank account for instant debit via Stripe Financial Connections (not slow ACH that may bounce days later). Apple Pay and Google Pay work when adding a card on iOS and Android.
When does Kilo charge my card?
With autopay, your card is charged on billing day. Otherwise, tap Pay when you're ready. You're overdue if you miss the due date. Owners get a renewal reminder two days out.
What happens if my payment fails?
For autopay, we retry up to 3 times with 24 hours between attempts. If all fail (plus a grace period), you're marked overdue and autopay pauses. You'll need to fix your payment method and pay manually or re-enroll.
For manual pay, you're marked overdue the day after billing day. Pay from Home or split detail; late fees ($1 per missed billing cycle) are included in the quote before you confirm.
We don't charge a failed-payment fee from Kilo. Your bank may charge NSF fees on its own.
How do owners receive payouts (Stripe Connect)?
Owners who want to receive member payments complete Stripe Connect Express onboarding in Profile: identity, tax, and bank details for payouts. Until Connect is set up and charges are enabled, members may be blocked from paying that owner.
When a member pays, money is routed to the owner's connected account via a destination charge, minus Kilo's platform fee. Owners can open the Stripe Express Dashboard from Profile for payout history.
What is autopay and how do I turn it on?
Autopay is optional off-session charging on billing day. Only accepted, non-owner members can enroll, and the share must be at least $3. Toggle it on from split detail; you'll see consent text and a version stamp.
Turning autopay off does not by itself mark you late. You'll just pay manually going forward. Re-enrolling clears previous pause reasons from failed attempts.
What fees does Kilo charge?
Members pay a platform processing fee on each share payment (not Stripe's card-network fee, a separate Kilo fee). The exact amount is shown in a quote before you confirm. The fee has a floor and cap in USD; Kilo Plus cuts it in half. Owners paying themselves owe $0.
A $1 late fee applies per missed billing cycle when paying overdue balances. Late fees are never waived by Plus or public beta subsidies. During beta, the platform fee itself may be subsidized. Check the in-app quote.
Why was my card charged a different amount this month?
A few possibilities:
- The underlying service raised its price (and the Owner updated the split to match).
- A Member joined or left the split, so everyone's share got recalculated.
- It's a different billing cadence, e.g. you pay annually instead of monthly.
- Late fees for missed billing cycles or platform processing fees shown at checkout.
Open the split and tap "Billing history" to see the exact breakdown for each charge. If something looks off, message the Owner first; if you still think there's an error, email support@getkilo.app.
Do you offer refunds?
For refunds between Members of a split (e.g., someone paid for a month they shouldn't have), the Owner of the split can initiate a refund to the Member from inside the app.
Your account, your control.

How do I change my email or phone number?
Go to Settings → Account. Tap the field you want to change. We'll send a verification code to the new address or number before we save it. If you've lost access to your old email or phone, contact support@getkilo.app with a government ID and we'll help you recover the account.
How do I update my payment method?
Go to Settings → Payment methods. You can add, remove, or set a default. If a card is being used for active splits, you can swap it for another card before removing it.
How do I enable Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN?
Go to Settings → Security. Toggle "Require biometric to open" and/or set a 6-digit PIN. Biometric data never leaves your device. Kilo only receives a yes/no signal from your operating system.
I forgot my password.
On the login screen, tap "Forgot password?" and enter the email on your account. We'll send a reset link. If you signed up with Apple, you don't have a Kilo password. Sign in with Apple and you're in.
I think someone else has access to my account.
Act fast:
- Change your password from Settings → Security → Change password.
- Sign out all other sessions from Settings → Security → Sign out everywhere.
- Turn on biometric or PIN lock.
- Email security@getkilo.app with details. We can review recent activity and reverse any unauthorized changes.
How do I export my data?
Go to Settings → Privacy → Download my data. We'll email you a link to a JSON file containing your profile, your splits, and your transaction history, usually within a few hours. See the Privacy Policy §10 for your full data rights.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account → Delete account. You'll need to leave any splits you're still part of, or transfer ownership of splits you own. After you confirm, we'll delete your data within 30 days, except for records we're required to keep for tax and accounting reasons. Deletion is permanent. We can't bring an account back.
When something's not working.
Quick fixes for the most common issues.
The app won't open or keeps crashing.
Try these in order:
- Force-quit and reopen the app.
- Make sure you're on the latest version (App Store → Updates, or Play Store → My apps).
- Restart your phone.
- If it's still crashing, email support@getkilo.app with your device model, OS version, and the app version shown in Settings → About. Crash logs are sent automatically so we can usually spot the issue quickly.
I didn't receive the SMS verification code.
Double-check that the number you entered is correct and includes the country code. Some carriers have short-code delays of 2–5 minutes. If it still hasn't arrived, tap "Resend code" after 60 seconds. If your carrier blocks short-code messages, use "Sign in with email" instead.
I can't find my friend by phone number.
Your friend needs to (a) have a Kilo account, and (b) have verified the phone number you have saved for them. If the number in your contacts is different from the one on their Kilo account, they won't show up in friend search. Ask them to check which number is on their account in Settings → Account.
I'm not getting push notifications.
Check two places:
- Your device settings: iOS Settings → Notifications → Kilo → Allow Notifications. On Android, Settings → Apps → Kilo → Notifications.
- Inside Kilo: Settings → Notifications. Make sure the categories you care about are enabled.
If both look right and you're still missing notifications, toggle them off and on once, or sign out and back in.
My card was declined but the bank says nothing is wrong.
Stripe's fraud detection (Radar) sometimes flags a transaction even when the card itself is fine, for example if the billing address on file doesn't match, or if your bank hasn't seen Kilo before. Fixes:
- Re-enter your card details carefully, including ZIP / postal code.
- Call your bank and tell them to expect a charge from "Kilo" or "Stripe*Kilo."
- Try a different payment method.
If it's still failing, email support@getkilo.app and we'll look up the specific decline reason on our end.
What we know, and what we don't.
Short answers. The full details are in our Privacy Policy.
What data does Kilo collect about me?
Your name, email, phone number, profile photo, the splits you create or join, the cards you've added (only the last 4 digits; Stripe stores the full number), your device and app version, and aggregated usage analytics. Full breakdown in the Privacy Policy §3.
Who can see my splits?
Only the other Members of that specific split. They see your display name, profile photo, and the amounts you owe or are owed in that split. They don't see your email, phone number, payment details, or any other splits you're part of.
Is my full card number stored on Kilo's servers?
No. Full card numbers are tokenized and stored by Stripe (which is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified). Kilo only ever sees the last 4 digits, card brand, and expiry, which is what we show in the app.
How does Kilo handle my contacts?
Your contacts stay on your device. When you use "Find friends on Kilo," the app hashes each phone number locally with SHA-256 and sends only the hashes to our servers to look for matches. Hashes that don't match are deleted within 24 hours. The names and raw phone numbers in your address book never leave your device.
Step-by-step in the Privacy Policy §3.5.
Does Kilo sell my data?
No. We don't sell your data, and we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising under the CCPA/CPRA definition. We honor Global Privacy Control signals from browsers that send them.
Our team will get back to you.
We read every message. Expect a reply within one business day.
